Out of the 108 reviews on travel website TripAdvisor, 93 rate Portree’s Brigadoon Sea Eagle and Wildlife Boat Trips as ‘Excellent’, with a further 10 rating as ‘Very Good’ – a superb endorsement from those who have enjoyed the daily trips aboard the Brigadoon.
Run by Peter Urquhart, owner of the Urquhart Caledonian Hotel in Wentworth Street, who was born and brought up in Skye, and skippered by Peter Elford, a passionate wildlife enthusiast, and George Burns, a retired police officer and keen angler, the Brigadoon and crew have been operating out of Portree since 1996.
The first tour company to bring sea eagle feeding to the public, last year visitors aboard the Brigadoon were treated to the sight of Britain’s largest bird of prey on 99% of trips – alongside a host of other bird and sea life.
Customer satisfaction is very much top of the list for the Brigadoon crew with Skippers, Peter and George, on hand to guide, inform and entertain.
The Brigadoon has been awarded a TripAdvisor ‘Certificate of Excellence’ every year since their introduction, and comments made online by last summer’s visitors highlight why.
“The best trip we did, such amazing wildlife, Peter was terrific guide and only too happy to accommodate our specific needs,” says one reviewer, which continues, “He found all the animals we were hoping for and manoeuvred the boat for maximum viewing advantage, very considerate.”
Another says, “We went out this morning with George on the Brigadoon boat trip. My expectations were that we may see an eagle flying around and possibly coming down to feed - these expectations were not only met but exceeded tenfold!”
And other happy customers report: “We were all amazed to have seen two White Tailed Sea Eagles within 20 minutes and ultimately had the large female swoop down alongside the boat for a fish shortly before the end of the trip!
“A day in which memories were definitely made and Pete the Skipper definitely knew his subject very well which made the trip even more informative. Do not miss this trip!”
Leaving daily from Portree Harbour, the Brigadoon Sea Eagle and Wildlife Tour takes two hours, heading to the Straits of Raasay, before slowly making its way around the bays and under cliffs, allowing passengers views of the spectacular Jurassic landforms and sea caves that can’t be seen from the land.
Keeping an eagle-eye out, the Brigadoon skippers will stop to identify any wildlife encountered, from the famous White Tailed Sea Eagles, Golden Eagles and other sea-birds to seals, porpoises, otters, whales and basking sharks.
As well as Sea Eagle and Wildlife watching trips, the Brigadoon crew also offer the opportunity for three-hour evening fishing trips out of Portree.
With their local knowledge and all equipment provided, the chances are high of catching a wide range of fish, including mackerel, wrasse and specimen pollock.
And for those dedicated to catching wildlife on camera, the Brigadoon’s Photography Trips present the chance to ‘shoot’ Skye’s eagles and wildlife
in the early morning, with the rising sun creating some great lighting and stunning colours.
The Brigadoon is also available for private charters, for extended fishing or wildlife spotting trips, private cruises, holidays, or that unique holiday experience.
